Following Jesus in obedience after salvation
Scroll down to learn what the Bible says about baptism.
What is baptism?
Baptism is an outward picture of an inward change. It does not save us — only Jesus does that — but it shows publicly what He has already done in our heart. Going under the water is a picture of His death and burial; coming up again is a picture of His resurrection and the new life we have in Him.
In the Bible, baptism always comes after a person has believed on the Lord Jesus Christ. It is a step of obedience, not a step of earning salvation.
First we believe the gospel and are saved; then we obey the Lord by being baptized.
When we are baptized by immersion, we are identifying with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Do I have to be baptized to be saved?
No. We are saved by grace through faith in Christ alone, not by works. Baptism is an act of
obedience after salvation, not a requirement to earn it.
When should I be baptized?
As soon as you have truly trusted Christ as your Savior and are ready to publicly identify with Him.
In the New Testament, believers were baptized shortly after they believed.
What if I’m nervous or unsure?
It’s normal to feel nervous. Talk with a pastor or trusted Christian, ask questions, and pray about
it. The Lord is gentle with His children and will help you take this step in His time.
